CHEERLEADERS' WILD WEEKEND (1979) MVD Rewind Collection Blu-ray Review

Image
The MVD Rewind Collection brings a little-discussed Drive-In exploitation goodie back into print, one of the last of the theatrical entries in the Cheerleader genre of the time, 1979's CHEERLEADERS' WILD WEEKEND, starring Kristine DeBell, Marilyn Joi, Leon Isaac Kennedy, and Jason Williams. Perhaps misleadingly titled and featuring a cover that leads you to believe you're getting a film from a later period and lighter tone, this one is nonetheless filled with fun, fright, frolic, and copious nudity, everything you were looking for in a 70's R-rated Drive-In movie. Looking good and loaded with extras ported over from the previous Scorpion Releasing disc, this is a fun one to pair with REVENGE OF THE CHEERLEADERS (1976). COP KILLERS (1977) MVD Classics Blu-ray Review

Image
MVD Entertainment Group brings the 1977 Drive-In exploitation thriller COP KILLERS to Blu-ray in a nice sharp transfer with extras ported over from the 2006 Media Blasters DVD. From the folks who brought you FLESH GORDON, and featuring its star Jason Williams, this gritty flick follows two small-time drug smugglers looking to make one big score and retire, but a police ambush turns them into the titular wanted men as they dash to make the deal and get to the border in one piece. THE MAD BOMBER (1973) Severin Films Blu-ray Review

Image
Severin Films gives fans of 70s Drive-In sleaze a gift with a deluxe edition of Bert I. Gordon's THE MAD BOMBER (1973 - seen here in in its uncut THE POLICE CONNECTION form), starring Vince "Ben Casey" Edwards as a supercop on the trail of the titular terror, Chuck "Tourist Trap" Connors, creating chaos around Los Angeles with bagged boom-booms. Aggressive assaulter Neville "Eaten Alive" Brand can finger the fiend, but first Edwards has to catch him. Loaded with nudity, vintage early 70s Los Angeles locations, and gory post-explosion carnage, it's a wild ride, long unseen by genre fans. Transfer looks great, and we get two cuts of the film (including the sanitized TV edit with a bonus scene), copious extras, and nice throwback packaging. NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST (1958) / ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES (1959) Film Masters Blu-ray Review

Image
Film Masters brings a pair of Gene Corman produced (and Roger Corman Executive Produced) American International Pictures Drive-In titles to Blu-ray in another solid release. This time around, we get the THING-inspired NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST (1958), and ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES (1959), two creature features with low budgets and running times that hit the late night sweet spot. Transfers are the best we've seen (while dealing with damaged materials on NIGHT), with Tom Weaver audio commentaries, trailers, the 8mm version of NIGHT, a documentary on the director of both films, Bernard L. Kowalski (hosted by C Courtney Joyner) and more. While not top-tier B-movies, still a fun double for fans of cheapjack monsterflicks and Drive-In classics. IMPULSE (1974) Grindhouse Release 2-Disc Blu-ray Release - Teaser

Image
I've only just gotten to the second, "Extras" disc of Grindhouse Releasing 's upcoming Blu-ray set of William Grefe's IMPULSE (1974), starring William Shatner as a Florida psychopath, and it's easily the release of the year so far. A fun thriller LOADED with supplements (including two bonus films) and easter eggs, this is a must-have companion to Arrow Video 's HE CAME FROM THE SWAMP set of Grefe films, and should be on any 60s-70s exploitation/Drive-In film fan's shelf. Review coming soon, but with hours and hours of content on this second disc...not TOO soon! Amazon has it up for pre-order here, with partial specs: https://amzn.to/3ONBdP8 (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.)
